About the Parrot Duit
On November 25, 1975, Suriname gained independence after nearly three centuries as a Dutch colony, and to celebrate 50 years of freedom, the Royal Dutch Mint is issuing a special reissue of the historic Surinamese Papegaai Duit (Parrot Coin). Originally made of copper and about 20 mm in diameter, the Papegaai Duit features a parrot perched on a branch with one to four leaves, indicating the coin’s value, while the reverse is often blank or adorned with a decorative tree. Parrots, beloved across Suriname, were chosen for the country’s first coins, which represented 1, 2, and 4 pounds of sugar, with each pound equaling one stuiver (five cents). To make these values easy to recognize, the coins used visual cues: a branch with one leaf for 1 stuiver, two leaves for 2 stuivers, and four leaves for 4 stuivers. This carefully crafted restrike honors Suriname’s rich history and its milestone of 50 years of independence.
